Over the last 12 months, NGINX has shown the most consistent growth out of all of the top Server Vendors. Since this time last year, it has grown by 12.9M hostnames, which is only slightly below that of Apache’s growth of 13.3M. In terms of market share, however, Apache has actually lost 4.7% this year, whereas nginx has seen a large increase, gaining 5.2% over the year.

Hundreds of thousands of businesses advertise on Google AdWords but 80% of Google’s US revenue comes from about 1.5% of the advertisers. Your business, like ours, is probably in the latter part.

The overall industry average click fraud rate in Q2 2009 was 12.7%. That’s down from 13.8% for Q1 2009 and from the 16.2% rate reported for Q2 2008. (Click fraud is a type of Internet crime that occurs in pay per click online advertising when a person, automated script or computer program imitates a legitimate user of a web browser clicking on an ad, for the purpose of generating a charge per click without having actual interest in the target of the ad’s link.)

Google AdWords advertiser data (Source: SEM Rush)

The paid clicks in Q2/2009

were up 15 percent year-over-year, but down 2 percent from the first quarter.

One advertiser has lost a ton of money by incorrectly configuring Google Adwords account settings. Something as innocuous as a decimal point accidentally typed in the wrong position has cost some advertisers dearly because like the majority they didn’t think to check their account regularly. Please note that you must check your Google Adwords account as often as possible. Most business owners delegate this task – but even so just a few minutes a day and even the most stressed business owner can monitor their account.

On September 15th 2009, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook “now serves 300 million people across the world.” It seems the site’s growth hadn’t exactly come to a stop, either, as about a month and a half later, stats indicate the number of users has risen to at least 325 million.

Facebook users in 2009

If you want to go to Facebook looking for instantaneous sales than you’ll arrive at the wrong place. Facebook gives the opportunity to build an ongoing relationship with your customer and that’s what Facebook is most useful for: building relationships.

It’s a platform to build ongoing relationships and “remarket” to your customers, as Facebook says in some of their own marketing copy. Understanding that these users are not ready to purchase is key to success on Facebook.

Facebook users

That means it’s more important to build a relationship with a potential client or an existing customer rather than closing a sale right away. So how does this law show up in practice? The most obvious form is through the Facebook Ads for pages and events.

Through these advertisements, users can become a fan or RSVP to an event directly from an ad. At that point, you have the opportunity to interact directly with that individual and build a relationship. If you had directed a user to your website, you would have been forced to have them enter a form or make a purchase right away. The odds of getting a user to fill out a form or make a purchase immediately is far less than getting them to become a fan of a Page or RSVPing to an event.

In order to become an effective Facebook advertiser, you need to have effectively defined your market. We help you take advantage of the 11 targeting factors that Facebook currently provides. To help define your market, we must go through the market segmentation process. This involves defining the need your company satisfies and then more thoroughly defining who your customer is.

We all want customers, but as we’ve continuously emphasized: Facebook marketing is not about instant sales. With that in mind, below are two practices that are good to keep in mind when setting your goals:

1. Don’t blow your budget in a day

2. You need to make sure that you are at least “engaging” your facebook visitors. If you want to see them again you must not wait two weeks to follow-up. The same goes for your fans. Follow-up with your fans often and consistently.

Although many PPC providers exist, Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and Microsoft adCenter are the three largest network operators, and all three operate under a bid-based model.

In February 1998 Jeffrey Brewer of Goto.com, a 25-employee startup company (later Overture, now part of Yahoo!), presented a pay per click search engine proof-of-concept to the TED conference in California. This presentation and the events that followed created the PPC advertising system. Credit for the concept of the PPC model is generally given to Idealab and Goto.com founder, Bill Gross.

Search engine market share between 2005-2008

Google started search engine advertising in December 1999. It was not until October 2000 that the AdWords system was introduced, allowing advertisers to create text ads for placement on the Google search engine. However, PPC was only introduced in 2002; until then, advertisements were charged at cost-per-thousand impressions. Yahoo! advertisements have been PPC-based since their introduction in 1998.

The list of runner-ups is pretty long…

New Jersey-based SearchFeed (http://www.searchfeed.com) first began operations in November of 2000 and has relied upon a technique of personally and thoroughly researching any potential Web advertiser and providing assistance and software tools to help each advertiser target the most relevant traffic to their site.

There are presently more than 8,000 websites integrated with SearchFeed and they estimate traffic of more than 360 million searches each month. SearchFeed claims to have more than 20 million unique keywords available and with a starting bid of 1 cent for many of those keywords, SearchFeed has built a reputation as a solid base from which to run an effective marketing campaign, especially for smaller businesses.

Google, Microsoft and Yahoo marketshare in 2009

Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the company that would eventually become 7Search began as a supplier of humor on the Internet. At some point, 7Search decided to concentrate on the PPC market and began diversifying with the slogan “the closest prospect to a buyer.” In 2004, 7Search claims to have over 400 million searches per month through their affiliates and partners.

What sets 7Search apart from other PPC search engines is their concentration on a niche market for the business owner who either does not want to or cannot afford to pay more than 10 cents per click.

Formerly known as Ask Jeeves, Ask.com is a part of IAC Search & Media, with headquarters in Oakland, California.

The keyword auction model pricing is based upon what is called the “eCPM ranking,” which is defined as the cost per click multiplied by the clickthrough rate. Your ad will be ranked using its eCPM rank in relation to other listings bidding on the same keyword(s). The minimum cost per click needed to guarantee placement at the top of the sponsored listings is known as the reserve price and is based upon “market intelligence” and Ask.com CPCs already in place.

A forecast of expected ad spend for a month is provided to advertisers. Budgets can be set for a campaign, for a daily spend or for a month’s worth of advertising.

Pay per click (PPC) is an Internet advertising model used on websites, in which advertisers pay their host only when their ad is clicked. With search engines, advertisers typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. Content sites commonly charge a fixed price per click rather than use a bidding system.

Cost per click (CPC) is the amount of money an advertiser pays search engines and other Internet publishers for a single click on its advertisement that brings one visitor to its website.

Pay per click is proven highly effective, paid search has become a very competitive marketplace:

Effective campaigns and higher ROI.

Advanced technologies track, monitor and boost performance.

Competitor insight and online activity analysis.

Access to a dedicated account manager.

Set your own budget.

In the flat-rate price model, the advertiser and publisher agree upon a fixed amount that will be paid. Please note that in many cases the publisher has a rate card that lists the CPC within different areas of their website or network.

These various amounts are often related to the content on pages, with content that generally attracts more valuable visitors having a higher CPC than content that attracts less valuable visitors. However, in many cases advertisers can negotiate lower rates, especially when committing to a long-term or high-value contract.

In the bid-based model, the advertiser signs a contract that allows them to compete against other advertisers in a private auction hosted by a publisher or, more commonly, an advertising network. Each advertiser informs the host of the maximum amount that he or she is willing to pay for a given ad spot (often based on a keyword), usually using online tools to do so. The auction plays out in an automated fashion every time a visitor triggers the ad spot.

We work on a month-to-month basis and there is no need to sign a complicated contract. Our clients usually stay with us based on the increased performance in their online advertising. In fact, if you are doing your own pay per click management; we’ll guarantee improving your results in the first month.
